Foxtrots. Quicksteps. Cha chas. An orchestra playing music from the 30’s, 40’s & 50’s. Tea & biscuits. LOTS of biscuits. This can only be The Tea Dance Spitalfields Market London SE1 1TL. This is an event that runs from April through til the end of September & takes place on the last Wednesday of every month. Music is provided by the awesome New Covent Garden Dance Orchestra.
Held from 12.30pm 2.30pm in the fully covered Crispin Place off Brushfield Street, E1 the tea dances were originally launched at the Royal Opera House as a way of bringing the community together through dance, music & tea. This sense of community & friendship is really evident here in Spitalfields Market as many of the dancers are real regulars. The atmosphere is wonderful & just watching their faces light up with passion & enthusiasm is really heart warming. As for the dancing? Wowza! These guys sure know how to bust a move on that dance floor, that’s for sure. Everyone is so friendly & willing to chat to the tourists & shoppers passing through Spitalfields as they literally do a double-take. As I was photographing I must have had 20 people or more stop & ask me “wow this is amazing, what is it?’ The orchestra is wonderful, the tea is free & the biscuits? Scrummy 😉
